At our CERTUS Memory Care community in Vero Beach, a resident recently made a touching remark to his wife: “This house is the best house we’ve lived in.” Without hesitation, the wife lovingly replied, “Yes, it is! And it has the most bedrooms of any house we’ve ever had.”

This exchange reflects the family’s commitment to supporting their loved one by stepping into his world readily—what we call meeting them where they are. It’s a powerful way to foster comfort and connection.

Our stand-alone memory care community, with its 64 private rooms, is thoughtfully designed to feel like home. When residents identify CERTUS as “home,” it shows how our environment and approach help ease the challenges of dementia. By affirming the resident’s perspective, this family created a moment of shared joy, demonstrating the power of meeting their loved one where he is in his journey.

Educational Insight:
For individuals living with dementia, a feeling of home may come from the comfort of their surroundings rather than the specifics of the location. Rather than correcting him, the wife validated his feelings, reducing anxiety and creating a positive, familiar experience of “being home.”

Takeaway:
The Vero Beach family’s story serves as an inspiring example of how loved ones can help residents adapt to memory care living. By embracing his reality and joining him in his world, they reinforced the sense of belonging that is central to our mission at CERTUS.
